Today, I am grateful for all that I have been given.

Everything that I am today is a result of what others have taught me. I could never have gotten this far without the help of the people around me. These are simple truths that can’t be appreciated enough.

I write this article with a wealth of personal experiences, skills, and a little bit of wisdom. As easy as it would be to attribute these characteristics and the accomplishments they have created to myself, that would be a complete lie. So I want to take a little time to recognize that I’m made up of much more than myself.

Almost 2 decades ago, I was a small tyke running around the house in his diapers. It was here that I began to learn to be the person I am today. My parents taught me the importance of kindness, showed me the power of knowledge, and introduced me to the pure beauty that the world has to offer. My interests, desires, and personality all saw their beginnings in these years. Everything I’m proud of has to be attributed in part to the help I received during these years.

Throughout my childhood, I learned more and more. I met new teachers both inside and outside of school. They taught me how to be a better writer, how to master the techniques of mathematics, and how to practice hard for an upcoming game. I witnessed things that seemed impossible. I felt the awe of experiencing something I never could have expected. These experiences changed me. They taught me to strive for more, to push myself to the limits of my capabilities, and to find new ways of expressing myself. It was through being with others and observing them that I began to go after the things I wanted.

I read books like Into the Wild and thought “I want to do that”. I became infatuated with nature and wildlife, I was constantly on the lookout for the next adventure, and I began to understand the power of written and spoken words. I read about how to write, I read about how to be happy, and I read about how to live. I started new habits and tried various self-experiments as a result of my reading. I kept the things that worked and scrapped the things that didn’t.

The people around literally became part of me as I began to take on bits and pieces of them that I identified the most with. All of that seeps into all that I do today. My writing is filled with phrases, ideas, and techniques I’ve adapted from others. My life is filled with habits, events, and places that others have introduced me to. To say I am only me is far from the actual truth. It’s a misleading comment and a dramatic understatement.

I am grateful for all I have been given. I understand that the people around me have helped me time and time again to reach my goals. Each morning I remind myself of just how lucky I am. As I move forward in this journey, I hope to give back to others as much as I have received. Through my fortunate circumstances, I hope to bring others good fortune as well. Happiness, love, and a good life must be shared with the world. I can’t make it through on my own. I need to help others and I will need their help too. This way we both prosper.

Today, I am so grateful for all that I have been given. Thank you!
